Sometimes a damaged tooth cannot be repaired with a filling. A dental crown is a carefully crafted, tooth-shaped cap that is placed over the tooth and should feel just like any other tooth. Our skilled dentists will talk you through the options and advise on the best crown for your particular needs.

Crowns
FAQs
A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over an existing tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. Crowns are used to protect heavily filled or weakened teeth, restore broken teeth, cover dental implants or improve the aesthetics of misshapen or discoloured teeth. At Maple Leaf Dental in Harrogate, we use high-quality materials to create crowns that are both strong and natural-looking.
You may need a crown if a tooth has a large filling that weakens the remaining structure, has been broken or cracked, has been root canal treated, or requires cosmetic improvement. A crown encases the entire visible portion of the tooth, providing full protection and restoring function. Your dentist will always explain clearly why a crown is being recommended in your specific case.
The cost of a dental crown at Maple Leaf Dental in Harrogate depends on the material used and the complexity of the case. Please see our fees page for current pricing. Finance options are available to help spread the cost of treatment if needed.
A crown typically requires two appointments. At the first, the tooth is prepared and shaped, impressions or digital scans are taken, and a temporary crown is fitted. At the second appointment — usually two to three weeks later — the custom-made permanent crown is fitted and adjusted. We will ensure the fit and appearance meet your expectations before cementing.
With good care, dental crowns typically last between 10 and 20 years. Longevity depends on the material used, bite forces and how well the crown and surrounding tooth are maintained. Regular check-ups allow us to monitor the condition of your crowns and address any issues early. Avoiding very hard foods or grinding habits will also help extend the life of a crown.
Crown preparation is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure — only pressure and vibration. Some sensitivity around the prepared tooth is normal in the days following the appointment and typically settles. If you experience significant or prolonged discomfort, please contact us so we can assess the tooth.
At Maple Leaf Dental we use high-quality ceramic and zirconia crowns, which offer excellent strength and natural aesthetics. These tooth-coloured materials closely mimic the appearance of enamel and are highly durable. For back teeth under greater biting forces, we may recommend a stronger material. Your dentist will discuss the most appropriate option for your individual tooth.
Care for your crown just as you would a natural tooth — brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss around the crown and gum line, and attend regular check-ups and hygiene appointments. The tooth beneath the crown can still develop decay at the margins, so maintaining excellent hygiene around it is important. Avoid biting extremely hard foods or using your teeth as tools.
Delaying a recommended crown puts the tooth at risk of fracture, which may result in the tooth being unrestorable. A cracked or broken tooth often becomes more complex and costly to treat. In some cases, an untreated tooth may require extraction and replacement with an implant or bridge. Acting on your dentist's recommendation early protects both the tooth and your long-term oral health.
Crown dislodgement is uncommon but can occur, usually due to weakening cement or decay at the margins. If your crown comes loose or falls off, contact Maple Leaf Dental as soon as possible. Keep the crown safe and avoid eating on that side. In many cases the crown can simply be re-cemented, though the tooth will need to be assessed first.
