Root Canal

Treat infection and inflammation
Save teeth from extraction with this effective treatment

Root canal treatment is used to treat infection at the center of a tooth (the pulp). Infection and inflammation can cause toothache and eventually move to surrounding teeth and other parts of the body. The purpose of this treatment is to remove the infected pulp and save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Having removed the infection and filled the tooth and root canal, we will often protect the tooth with a new, natural-looking crown.

FAQs

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is a procedure used to treat infection or damage inside a tooth's root canal system. The infected pulp is removed, the canals are cleaned, shaped and sealed. A crown is usually placed afterwards to protect the tooth. Root canal treatment allows a tooth that would otherwise need extraction to be saved and kept functional.

Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and should not be painful during the procedure. Many patients find it no more uncomfortable than having a filling. The tooth and surrounding area may feel tender for a few days afterwards, which is well managed with over-the-counter pain relief. The discomfort of an untreated infected tooth is usually far greater than the treatment itself.

Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed — usually due to deep decay, a cracked tooth or trauma. Symptoms can include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling, or darkening of the tooth. Sometimes there are no obvious symptoms and the issue is identified on a routine X-ray.

Root canal treatment at Maple Leaf Dental is typically completed over one to two appointments, depending on the complexity of the case and whether infection is present. We will give you a clear timeline during your assessment. Afterwards, a follow-up appointment is needed to place a permanent crown to protect the treated tooth.

The cost of root canal treatment at Maple Leaf Dental in Harrogate depends on the tooth being treated — front teeth have fewer canals than back teeth, which affects complexity and time. Please visit our fees page or contact us for current pricing. Finance options may be available to help manage the cost of treatment.

After local anaesthetic is administered, a small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the root canals. The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped using fine instruments, then filled with a biocompatible material and sealed. The tooth is then usually restored with a crown to protect it and restore full function.

Some tenderness around the treated tooth for a few days after treatment is normal and can be managed with standard pain relief. You should avoid chewing on the tooth until the final crown is placed. Most patients can return to normal activities the following day. We will arrange a follow-up appointment to fit the permanent crown and confirm the treatment has been successful.

Root canal treatment has a high success rate — typically above 90% when carried out to a high standard. Success depends on the degree of infection, the anatomy of the root canals and how well the tooth is restored afterwards. A well-fitted crown placed promptly after treatment significantly improves the long-term outcome. We use modern techniques and digital imaging to maximise predictability.

The main alternative to root canal treatment is extraction of the tooth. However, losing a tooth can lead to drifting of neighbouring teeth, bite changes and bone loss over time. Replacing an extracted tooth with an implant, bridge or denture adds further cost and complexity. Where a tooth can be saved with root canal treatment, it is usually the preferred long-term option.

Common signs include persistent or severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, pain on biting, swelling near the tooth, or a recurring pimple on the gum. Sometimes there are no obvious symptoms and the issue is detected on a routine X-ray. If you're experiencing any of these signs, contact Maple Leaf Dental in Harrogate for an assessment as soon as possible.
